Season One opens with Dean showing up at Sam's door stating that their father has been on a hunting trip and not returned. Dean is asking for Sam's help. Sam is reluctant to go due to having previous issues with his father. Sam eventually agrees and so they set off. Early in the season Sam's girlfriend is killed. Sam believes he could have protected her if he was still there instead of leaving with his brother. Sam decides not to go to his law school interview and that he wants to hunt the thing that killed his girlfriend.
Sam and Dean's mother died the same way when Sam was a baby, causing the brothers to believe that the thing that killed their mother also killed Sam's girlfriend. They decide to go after it, but at the same time to help others by fighting the supernatural. They travel all over the country but struggle to get any closer to the demon or their father and come to the conclusion that neither want to be found. Later they found their father, who reveals that the creature is a demon. However, at the end of this season, after failing to kill The Demon, the three are involved in a car accident, leaving them wounded.
