Their father gives The Colt, and his soul, to The Demon, in exchange for him saving Dean. In Season Two it is clear that The Demon had a bigger plan for Sam Winchester. On the night his mother died Sam was infected with Demon blood, which may be why Sam manifests his psychic gifts as an adult. He also did this to other children, on a night six monthes after their birth. In part one of the season finale, The Demon gathered all the special children in a deserted town to fight until one remains. Sam would be killed by another special child, but would be ressurected when Dean sold his soul. Azazel is killed, but not until his plans are completed and a door to Hell (the 'Devil's Gate') opened momentarily, releasing several demons.
